Nike to sponsor Socceroos

Sportswear giant Nike has signed a multi-million dollar, nine-year sponsorship deal with the Australian national soccer team.

Nike will sponsor all of Australia's national teams until the end of 2015. That includes the 2010 and 2014 World Cup tournaments.

FFA chief executive Ben Buckley said: "Off the back of the World Cup and with the AFC Asian Cup just around the corner it is an exciting time to be associated with football. This commitment from such a prestigious international sports brand is a terrific endorsement for the game in Australia."

Nike Pacific MD Paul Zadoff added: "In 2004 Nike was excited about the potential of football in Australia and the success of the game over the past two years has surpassed our expectations - not only at the highest level of the game, but also the increasing popularity of the Hyundai A-League and the growing levels of participation in the sport at grassroots."

Jets vs Roar

Jets thrashed Roar 3-0 in a dominating match where error-riddled Roar made all the wrong moves in front of 10,040 Brisbane fans.

Newcastle's A-League resurrection under Gary van Egmond has gone into overdrive lifting the Jets to third on the table.

Mark Bridge starred with a scintillating double to give the Jets their sixth win in nine matches under van Egmond and put them just one point behind second-placed Sydney FC.

Liverpool FC in overseas takeover deal

Dubai International Capital is on the verge of a £450 million takeover deal for English Premier League club Liverpool.

The club's board is reported to have given the company, the international investment arm of the Dubai government-owned Dubai Holdings, the right to study the club's books and complete a deal. The board rejected a £450 million bid from American multi-millionaire George Gillett Jnr, as well as up to three other rival offers.

The deal faces strong opposition from Liverpool fans who are opposed to the club falling into overseas hands.

Melbourne Victory took a 3-1 win over Adelaide in Adelaide for the first time. A sell-out Adelaide crowd came to see legendary Brazilian Romario do magic but the 40 year old is still looking for form.

Newcastle Jets were surprisingly held by New Zealand Knights to a 1-1 draw. The Jets got off to a flying start with a 13th minute goal but a 29th minute penalty tied the game.

Queensland Roar defeated Perth Glory 1-0 at Suncorp Stadium in Queensland giving Frank Farina his first win as coach.

And on Sunday the Central Coast Mariners held off Sydney FC to a 0-0 draw.

Adelaide vs Melbourne

Melbourne Victory took a fighting 3-1 victory over Adelaide in front of a sell-out crowd at Hindmarsh Stadium that had came to see legendary Brazilian Romario make his mark on the Australian league.

However it was the other two Brazilians, Melbourne's Fred and Adelaide's Fernando, who sparked the drama in the fast-paced game. Both teams were reduced to ten men early in the game, which meant there was more space available, and it was Adelaide behind by one goal that was able to exploit the space better. At this stage of the game an equaliser looked inevitable, and it came in the 42nd minute by Fernando's header. However Melbourne Victory kept fighting and goals on the 62nd and 86th minutes put Victory 3-1 up and beyond Adelaide's reach.

CC Mariners vs Sydney FC

Sydney FC played Central Coast Mariners to a 0-0 draw at Gosford. The Mariners largely dominated the game and had a good opportunity to leap ahead of the champions in the ladder twice hitting the woodwork. First shot was a blazing free kick from Nik Mrdja early in the first half and the second came from an Andre Gumprecht.

Holding to a draw moved second-placed Sydney to two points clear of Adelaide on the ladder after extending its unbeaten streak to six games.

Grudge Match

Tonight Adelaide hosts another grudge match, but this time it is state against state.
Hindmarsh Stadium will be the scene for the continued Victoria-South Australia sporting rivalry when Adelaide United hosts A-League's best team Melbourne Victory.

Back in Round 8 Adelaide United coach John Kosmina and Melbourne Victory captain Kevin Muscat had a passionate meeting on the sidelines during United's 1-0 win at Telstra Dome. A tipped chair and gentle shove created headlines and led to Kosmina being sidelined and Muscat yellow-carded.

2010 FIFA World Cup

New South Wales premier Morris Iemma suggested that Australia could act as the fallback option to host the 2010 FIFA World Cup tournament sparking fury in host nation South Africa.

There are ongoing speculation that South Africa will not be ready to host the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

Football Federation Australia however said it had no reason to expect that the 2010 FIFA World Cup will take place anywhere other than South Africa. And wished South Africa every success in staging the world's largest sports event.
