FIFA vs G14

FIFA, world football governing body, could be set to reach a compromise deal with the G14 (group of leading football clubs) over the issue of compensation for clubs whose stars are on international duty.

FIFA has been in dispute with the G14 over who should pay to insure players on national duty, and pay their wages should the players return from international duty injured. At present FIFA rules say that clubs are responsible for insurance cover and all players must be released for international football. But FIFA says it is ready to alter the rules and to look at establishing an insurance fund and compensation fund for international players.

Belgian club Charleroi, which has the backing of the G14, is suing FIFA over an injury suffered on international duty by Morocco's Abdelmajid Oulmers. The Oulmers case has been sent to the European Court of Justice, where it is waiting to be heard.
