Victory too good for Adelaide in A-League opener

Round 1
25th August

The 2006-07 Hyundai A-League season kicked off at Olympic Park tonight with the Melbourne Victory FC posting a surprise 2-0 win over Pre-Season Cup winner Adelaide United FC.

The Victory took the lead in the 29th minute through skipper Kevin Muscat who slotted home a penalty before Brazilian recruit Claudin ensured Ernie Merrick’s side would snare all three points on opening night.

The Victory took the lead after Brazilian left back Alessandro was brought down by Richie Alagich.

Daniel Allsopp smacked a drive which was too hot for Adelaide keep Robert Bajic to hold with Claudin arriving first to the loose ball to give the Victory an unassailable 2-0 lead.

Adelaide coach John Kosmina said, "They were probably a hungrier side, Melbourne were pumped up for this match. So were we, but they were a bit more pumped than us."

It seems everyone was pumped up for this one before a crowd of 15,781.
