Adelaide win pre-season Cup
Adelaide United won its second A-League trophy when they defeated the Central Coast Mariners 5-4 on penalties in the pre-season cup final at Gosford.
It was a revenge of sorts for Adelaide who was eliminated from last season's regular finals series by the Mariners.
Richie Alagich, Greg Owens, Ross Aloisi, Shengqing Qu and Veart netted from the spot for Adelaide while Jamie McMaster, Wayne O'Sullivan, Noel Spencer and John Hutchinson converted for the Central Coast. Steward Petrie saw his penalty kick hit the bar and go over.
The match finished 1-1 after 90 minutes. Veteran Adelaide striker Carl Veart scored with 7th minute overhead kick before the Mariners drew level when former Perth Glory midfielder Andrew Gumprecht levelled for the Mariners in the 77th minute.
Adelaide kick off the new Hyundai A-League season with a visit to Melbourne on Friday August 25 while the Mariners head to Perth to tackle the Glory on Sunday.
