A-League History

Following the end of the National Soccer League a couple of years ago a new league, the A-League, was formed with an eight-team competition. In an attempt to concentrate player talent within regions the selected cities were Sydney, Perth, Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide, Newcastle, Gosford and Auckland (New Zealand). These are the eight foundation clubs of the A-League.

The A-League competition consists of 21 home-and-away rounds with the top four teams entering a finals series. The season ends with a grand final in March. There is no system for promotion and relegation of teams or knockout competitions.

The creation of the A-League allowed for many past and present Australian players to return and play on home soil. So far the A-League's second season has seen the return of such current Australian international players as Stan Lazaridis, Tony Vidmar and Joel Griffiths, which has boosted the media attention of the league.

The first season 2005-2006 was a huge success with exciting matches and controversy. The 2006-2007 season will be even bigger and there is talk about expanding the league to Townsville, Canberra, Wollongong in 2007-2008.

Thanks to Australia's World Cup success football is now an 'in' sport. Soon after the World Cup the AFC Champions League offered two Australian teams with places in the tournament. These events have cemented the A-League and football in Australia. The future looks very bright with scores of kids taking up football and looking up to their World Cup heroes.
